The Cabbage Soup Diet is a low-fat, high-fiber diet which claims to be a great kick-start to a more traditional diet. Proponents claim that a dieter can lose ten pounds in seven days. It is sometimes referred to as the Mayo Clinic Diet, the Dolly Parton Diet, or the Sacred Heart Diet.
The main component of the Cabbage Soup Diet is a vegetable soup made of cabbage, onions, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, celery, and mushrooms flavored with curry, garlic, or cayenne pepper. The dieter is encouraged to eat as much of this soup as he wants. At least four glasses of water and a multivitamin tablet are also part of the regimen.
The Cabbage Soup Diet plan calls for a specific combination of food on each of the seven days of the diet. The plan for Day 1 consists of soup and fruit, except for bananas. On Day 2 the dieter eats fresh, raw or cooked vegetables and the soup. Dinner is a big baked potato with butter. Eat no fruit on this day. Day 3 is a mixture of the first two days, with the elimination of the baked potato and butter. On Day 4 the dieter is instructed to eat as many as eight bananas and drink as many as eight glasses of skim milk, as well as the cabbage soup. This is supposed to lessen desire for sweets. On Day 5 of the Cabbage Soup Diet the dieter finally gets to eat meat—10 to 20 ounces of beef, chicken or fish. The dieter is also instructed to eat up to six fresh tomatoes, drink at least six to eight glasses of water, and eat the soup. Day 6 consists of the cabbage soup and unlimited amounts of beef and vegetables, but no potato. On the final day of the Cabbage Soup Diet the dieter eats brown rice, unsweetened fruit juice, vegetables, and the soup.
The disadvantages of the Cabbage Soup Diet are that some dieters find the soup bland and they get bored with it. Some people feel light-headed or weak during the course of the diet, probably because of a temporary imbalance of electrolytes. The advantages include the high vegetable and fiber content of the plan. Many people have been using this diet for years and recommend it highly.
